The Forest Stewardship Council has recognized Deramakot Forest Reserve as the first naturally occurring tropical rainforest in the world as "well managed." In addition, this 55,507-hectare forest has held the unique distinction of being the world's oldest certified rainforest until 2019, having been granted this status by the Forest Stewardship Council in 1997.Â


Deramakot is one of the best selectively logged mixed dipterocarp forest in Borneo if not Southeast Asia. It is around 2 and a half hours away from Telupid town, and it is only accessible by four-wheel drive vehicles. It is famous for mammal watching and wildlife Safaris. The Sabah Forestry Department is in charge of this region.Â

Wildlife:
Orangutan, Gibbon, Langurs, Pygmy Elephants, Clouded Leopards, Leopard Cats, Marbled Cats, Binturong, Sun Bear, Malay Stink Badger, Porcupine, Yellow-Throated Marten, Slow Loris, Flying Squirrels, Coluggo, and many types of birds including the Rhinoceros Hornbill.
 ITINEARYÂ
Day 1
Meet driver at Cafe 77 at Telupid town around lunch time.
Depart to Deramakot at 2p.m.
Afternoon safari (optional based on animals sightings/behaviour)
Dinner
Day 2 & 3
3 times of 2 hours safaris in the morning, afternoon and night. No time set as it depends on animal sightings/behaviour.
In between safari, you can wander around for bird sightings and visit orangutans, sight some gibbons.
Day 4
Depart from Deramakot approximately 9 am.
