Mount Trusmadi: Sabah’s Forgotten Kingdom of Rare Wildlife

mOUNT TRUSMADI

While Mount Kinabalu often steals the spotlight, its lesser-known neighbor, Mount Trusmadi, offers an equally thrilling adventure - with even more untamed wilderness! Mount Trusmadi derives its name from the Dusun word “pinotorusan” which means ‘hunting ground’, and “Madi” which is the name of the man who used to hunt there. Mount Trusmadi is a forest reserve covering an area of 184,527 hectares with a peak at 2642 meters (8,668 feet). It is also the second highest mountain in Sabah, after Mount Kinabalu. The surrounding area borders four districts in Sabah – north of Ranau, west of Tambunan, south of Keningau, and east of Sook.

The mountain is said to be more challenging than Mount Kinabalu. This is due to the narrow trails that have steep drops, almost vertical rocks, slopes and ladders to climb. Despite the challenge, the hike is worth it as a nature lover due to its rich biological diversity consisting of ecotic and rare plants, nepenthes, orchids, birds and more . The mountain offers five different forest vegetations which are lowland mixed dipterocarp, hill mixed dipterocarp forest, lower montane forest, upper montane forest and summit scrub. Similar to Mount Kinabalu, Mount Trusmadi is extraordinary since it has been gazetted as a Class 1 Forest Reserve and has an abundance of rare plants.

All climbers on Mount Trusmadi must be accompanied by forestry staff or certified, experienced local guides at all times. The Sabah Forestry Department (SFD) only permits guides and porters who have undergone their training to lead visitors on any hike up Mount Trusmadi. Although it is possible to climb Mount Trusmadi in two days, it is advised to take four days for a more pleasant ascent to enable one to adjust to the higher altitude. Mount Trusmadi is perfect for adventure and thrill-seekers whether they have climbed Mount Kinabalu or not and are looking for a different experience, or just nature enthusiasts who want to broaden their knowledge may be interested.

The Trusmadi Soundtrack
