MENDARAM LONGHOUSE
The 12-door, iconic red roofs of Mendaram Besar Longhouse was first built in the 1970s and is now home to about 100 residents in 2019. The word ‘Mendaram’ means the presence of a lot of mosquitoes in an area. People back then associated being bitten by mosquitoes with being rubbed with salt (garam), which slowly changed over time to mendaram.
It is advisable to get a tour package or contact an authorised tour guide from the longhouses’ personnel before visiting. You might also need to register at the police station nearby for visiting.
